Live in Nykirke
I actually didn't know how Brussels sprouts grew before I grew them. None of us have a background in this. It's a bit of a coincidence that we ended up in this.
The film about Nykirke
I actually didn't know how Brussels sprouts grew before I grew them.
None of us have a background in this. It's a bit of a coincidence that we ended up in this.
Even though I really wanted to grow it. But we envisioned a kitchen garden and 10 chickens. It got a little bigger.
Very different life. It was hectic before. Not that it's not less hectic now, but life was kind of screwed up a little differently. I worked in substance abuse and psychiatry and had a small apartment in the city. I also had a really small apartment in Oslo, so then it became Vestfold. But then I also thought that I don't want a small apartment in Tønsberg, so this came up.
And then there was a very dilapidated house in Nykirke instead.
Yes!
Nykirke is... We were struck by how close-knit it is. When new people move in, they come to the doors with flowers and welcome them. Yes, it was very nice.
I've never experienced that before anywhere. So Nykirke strikes me as a very nice village.
What's really nice about Nykirke is that it's close to the center of Oslo. It takes us less than an hour to get to Oslo. You can just jump straight onto the highway with your car and you're in the city right away. Borrevannet is very close. The forest. Lots of beaches. It's really close to everything; city, countryside, beach, archipelago.
We run a cooperative farm. Families buy in there. We are about 80 families now. And they pay a sum at the beginning of the year, into the production and can then go and harvest their own goods throughout the year.
So here we have squash, cucumber, melon, pickles, pumpkin and everything.
They're building cabins all over the place. So now they have a cabin over here that's fenced in and has a small terrace and a picket fence.
A lot of the desire to do this has been to be self-sufficient in food or vegetables. So that's a lot of the motivation and drive, and it's fantastic to go pick your own food right outside your door.
